A late entry into competition for the Palme d’Or at this years Cannes film festival is the new film from British director Neil Jordan. Byzantium stars Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan as a mother and daughter duo who are trying to lie low in a quiet seaside town. Their secret, that they are two hundred year old vampires, soon comes out. Their past comes back to haunt them and has deadly consequences for all those around them.
With a bit of luck this will buck the current trend of films featuring vampires who look like catwalk models and shimmer in the sunshine. Neil Jordan has a varied and impressive filmography including one of the best modern vampire films in the form of Interview with A Vampire from 1994.
Byzantium is on general release from 31st May.
