Perhaps better known these days as a writer and producer for some of the biggest action films of recent times including The Transports films and The Taken films, Luc Besson was at one point feted as one of the most original and exciting directors working in both Europe and The US. For one reason or another he decided to hand off the directing duties to others and only occasionally is found in the directors chair. That changes with the forthcoming release of the new mob based comedy drama, The Family.
The Manzonis, a notorious Mafia family have turned their backs on their former friends and have taken refuge with the witness protection program. They have ended up relocated to a small town in Normandy, France in a bid to provide the family with a normal life. Unfortunately trouble seems to follow them at every turn.
With leading performances from Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer and Tommy Lee Jones this comedy drama has all the hallmarks of a Besson action film. There is a lot of explosions, fire fights and over the top characters. In addition there is a Goodfellas style voice over from Mr De Niro. What more could you ask for.
The Family is released on 20th September in the US and 8th November in the UK
