The post credits teaser for Captain America: The Winter Soldier introduced two new characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) are inhumans (since Fox has the mutant label tied up with X-Men) who can move at super-speed and warp reality respectively. If Quicksilver sounds familiar it’s because you saw him played by Evan Peters in X-Men: Days of Future Past. It’s a peculiar situation but not one that’s bothering Taylor-Johnson, “There’s no rivalry at all,” he says. “I’ll see it (X-Men: DOFP), but not see it from the standpoint of going ‘I’ve gotta do it better than that,’ or to do it differently in any way. What we’re doing is from another standpoint.”
Both characters will be showcased in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, but whose side will they be on? “They’re on Team Ultron,” says director Joss Whedon, “which makes things really hard for the Avengers because all of sudden they’re dealing with powers that they’re not used to.”
On the threat the new bad guys will pose to the Avengers, Whedon explains “we have a woman who can get inside your head and move objects, and a boy that can move faster than anything, and a robot (Ultron) who can self-replicate and is out of his mind. So all of sudden, it’s a darker, weirder, tougher world that they’re living in.”
The MCU is keeping the pair as siblings, however don’t hold your breath for any connection to Magneto.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron will be initially released on April 23rd, 2015.
