Sad news from Los Angeles this morning with the announcement that the actor James Garner has died at the age of eighty-six. Garner had been ill for some time after suffering a stroke in 2008. He is best known for his starring roles in the TV series Maverick and The Rockford Files as well as a number of high-profile movie roles.
Garner’s career began in 1956 and he hit the big time when he was cast as the lead in the TV series Maverick. The worldwide success of that show led to film roles in The Great Escape and Move Over, Darling. He is probably best remembered for the role of Jim Rockford in the The Rockford Files. For six years he starred as the easy-going private investigator who spent more time avoiding cases than taking them. For a generation, including myself, this is the enduring image that comes to mind when the name of Garner is mentioned. A real talent who will be greatly missed.
