It has just been announced that the World Premiere of dystopian fable The White King will take place on Saturday 18th June at Edinburgh International Film Festival where it’s nominated for the Michael Powell Award for Best British Feature Film and The Award for Best Performance in a British Feature Film. The film will be released in the UK by Signature Entertainment.The White King is the directorial debut of co-directors Jörg Tittel & Alex Helfrecht and boasts an impressive cast including Agyness Deyn , Jonathan Pryce, Fiona Shaw, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Greta Scacchi, the voice of Olivia Williams and introducing Lorenzo Allchurch.
The film is an adaptation of the internationally acclaimed and award winning Hungarian novel of the same name, written by György Dragomán. Also shot entirely on location in Hungary, the film follows Djata, a 12-year-old boy coming to grips with his father’s imprisonment by the totalitarian state he calls home. Preyed upon by the secret police and venal dignitaries, Djata and his mother (Agyness Deyn) are forced to navigate a world of propaganda, abuse and vicious gangs, making them risk everything to reunite their family.
The White King is directed by husband & wife team Alex Helfrecht & Jörg Tittel. They have won awards in several creative areas including film, theatre, videogames & comics. The directors said: “We are honoured to be a part of EIFF’s fantastic 2016 lineup. We have always viewed EIFF as one of the world’s greatest cinematic events and a launchpad for stories with a uniquely global outlook.”
