Jackie and No Strings Attached actress, Greta Gerwig, makes her directorial debut with this quirky and complex exploration of adolescence and family. Starring Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalfe, this small town, coming-of-age family drama deals with a young woman who wishes to swap her Catholic school for the laidback, hippy lifestyle of Northern California.
Christine McPherson (Ronan) has renamed herself Lady Bird and dreams of life beyond the rules and regulations of life in Sacramento. She drifts through her final year at school, with rather lofty ambitions of what life is like after high school. She wants her desires to be taken seriously – but the trailer reveals at least two people laughing at her aim of attending Yale.
Swathed in rather dreamy colours, it looks like a decent attempt at exploring teenage life and the uncertainty of making the leap to college. Ronan has already proved herself as a strong lead in a similar vein in 2015’s Brooklyn, so this should be a similarly spirited performance.
Lady Bird has just played at The Toronto Film Festival and will get a US national cinema release on the 10th of November.
