Disney chose the ad break of Sunday night’s Oscars ceremony to drop the first teaser trailer for Mary Poppins Returns. The sequel to the 1964 musical hit starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, picks up twenty years after the mysterious titular blew in to help Jane and Michael save their parents.
Emily Blunt proves delectable casting as the titular character, with a supporting cast including Meryl Streep, Julie Walters, Lin Manuel Miranda and the ever-fabulous, Angela Lansbury. Dick Van Dyke is also set to make a return … But there is no word yet as to his accent.
The trailer doesn’t give too much away, but shows Lin Manuel’s character – Jack the Lamplighter – wrestling with a brightly coloured kite in the London breeze, in a touching tribute to the film’s predecessor. The film is set during the Depression era and sees Mary visit a grown up Michael and his three children to help them recover after a personal loss.
Chicago and Into the Woods director, Rob Marshall is at the helm of this particular Poppins outing.
Mary Poppins Returns is set for a UK release on Christmas Day this year.
