Michael Douglas wins Emmy for Behind The Candelabra

Michael Douglas has rounded of a triumphant professional recovery by winning the Emmy for his portrayal of Liberace on the Steven Soderbergh biopic Behind the Candelabra. The award marks a bit of an embarrassment for the major US film studios who rejected the film due to its content and its apparent lack of appeal to mainstream audiences. HBO moved in to fund the project meaning that the US premiere would be a televisual event rather than cinematic one. It was released in theatres in all other territories. The film garnered praise at this years Cannes film festival and has been an international hit since its general release.

In gaining the Emmy for best performance in a mini series or movie Douglas bested some top class opposition in the form of co-star Matt Damon, Benedict Cumberbatch, Al Pacino and Toby Jones for his eerily accurate depiction of Alfred Hitchcock.
