Original and interesting ideas are a bit thin on the ground in mainstream cinema these days. So it came as a bit of a pleasant surprise to view the trailer for the new horror film The Purge. Set in the near future people live in a society where crime, violence and hate are all reduced. This is achieved by the annual purge, a twelve-hour period where all crime is permitted with no repercussions.
A family whose house in lockdown for the duration of the purge make what could be a fatal mistake of letting a man on the run into their house. soon the man’s pursuers are at the door looking for him. Violence ensues. Starring Lena Headey and Ethan Hawke this looks like a high concept horror that might be something a bit different.
The Purge is released in the UK on 31st May.
