Oscar season is slowly creeping up on us and making an early claim for some golden statues is Sarah Gavron’s Suffragette. Focusing on the early members of the British women’s suffrage movement of the late 19th and early 20th century, the film promises to be a powerful reminder of what women had to endure for the right to vote.
Unfortunately sexism is still an issue, especially in film, so don’t expect this to be comfortable viewing. Written, directed and produced by women, Suffragette will be a film that demands the attention of both sexes.
The film boasts an impressive cast, starring Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Meryl Streep, Ben Whishaw, Brendan Gleeson and Anne-Marie Duff.
Suffragette is set for a limited release in the United States on 23rd October 2015 by Focus Features and will be released in the United Kingdom on 30th October 2015.
