Sofa Cinema: This Week In VOD

Its another mixed week for home entertainment releases as a couple of the bigger films from the summer blockbuster season reach the VOD market. This year has been a bit of a bit of a disappointment in terms of quality movies. A larger than usual number of films have not met expectations or made an impact at the box office.

A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night

10-29-banner-A-Girl-Walks-Home-Alone-at-Night_tcm14-21820Out on Amazon Prime. A much hyped film due to the fact it was such a unique film. Few films can claim to be an Iranian vampire western. The hype was spot on as it is a great piece of movie making in the best tradition of the indie films of the 80’s and 90’s. Shot in black and white and featuring a lead actress who have basically nothing to say throughout the film is a risk. An absorbing and stylish drama that keeps you hooked and then keeps you thinking about it for some time after.

Finding Dory

finding-doryOne of the biggest films of the year comes to VOD. Finding Dory proved to be the biggest hit of the summer and helped to give Disney total domination this year. As with the best of Pixar, the film works on so many levels. It tackles some weighty issues while still appealing to its core audience of pre-teens. Ellen DeGeneres reprises her role from Finding Nemo in a tale that sees Dory trying to get back to her long lost family.

Ming Of Harlem

ming-of-harlem-4A very odd tale. The story of how a man came to be living on the twenty first story of an apartment building in Harlem with a Bengal tiger and an alligator. He came to the notice of the authorities when he was forced to call for help when the tiger took a fancy to his leg. The film concentrates on the main player in the tale, Antoine Yates. It cast no judgements and there is a rather unique sequence where the apartment is recreated with in a zoo and has a tiger ‘living in it’.

Up for Love

up-for-love-featuredThe French comedy that asks is size does in fact matter. Jean Dujardin and Virginie Efira star as a prospective couple who have to overcome several issues in order to be with each other. It is a bright and sparkling tale that makes the best use of Dujardin’s natural presence. Not perhaps for everyone but probably worth a punt if you are looking for something a little different.

Jason Bourne

bourne_matt-damonNot the best entry in the ongoing series but still an entertaining movie. Bourne, ten years after the events of the original trilogy, is a very different man. Living below the radar he is reluctantly brought back into the spy game to help an old friend. Matt Damon is good as always and has support from a stellar cast including Tommy Lee Jones and Alicia Vikander.
