As confirmed on Moviescramble previously, Denis Villeneuve will not be returning to the director’s chair for the hotly anticipated sequel to his 2015 hit, Sicario. The good news is that Suburra and Gomorrah director, Stefano Sollima, will be taking the storyline forward with his usual visceral visuals.
A new trailer dropped today – the first teaser appeared in December last year – and it’s only added to the increasing excitement surrounding the film. Hell or High Water writer Taylor Sheridan has provided the script whilst Josh Brolin and Benicio de Toro offer their equally brooding and edgy presence to the film.
Little has been given away as to the full storyline, but what is known is that the war with the drug cartels at the US-Mexican border has intensified. Del Toro’s character, Alejandro, is hired by CIA Agent Graver (Brolin) to purposefully cause more chaos between the duelling cartels by kidnapping the daughter of a notorious drug lord.
The trailer is incredibly tense, punctuated by gun shots and a piercing, frenetic soundtrack. And, let’s be honest, nobody does crazy eyes and shooter face quite like Del Toro. There are quick glimpses of government torture, car chases and shoot outs whilst Brolin’s character declares “If you want to see this thing through, I’m going to have to get … Dirty.” God only knows what that means … I can’t wait to find out.
Sicario: Day of the Soldado is set for release in UK cinemas on June 29.
